How do you loosely curl hair?

I'm really bored of having my hair straight all the time, but whenever I use curling tongs or whatever to curl my hair, where my hair is so thick and long I just look like a big weird poodle. Is there a way of having like slightly curly hair without so much volume.. and would curling with my straighteners make the curls looser and less dramatic? Also I have a fringe so would that make my hair look stupid?How do you loosely curl hair?
To get loose curls here what I do:

Wash your hair and put big rollers in your wet hair and go to bed.

Or..

Pin your hair up in sections

Curl it with a big curling iron

Then take another section of your hair and repeat process.
